I live in turkey country (Mesa Grande/Santa Ysabel) They need to be left alone for a few years. Let them recover....
Reeds for me. I can make sounds on a mouth call you can't do on anything else.
I make diaphragm calls as well
Gen,
I'll be raffling off a couple of his slate calls at the tune-up.....Money goes towards the J.A.K.E.S event.....Sweet sounding too.
I just recently got stationed in Camp Pendelton and I'm not familiar with the area but I was wondering if there were any good public land hunting for the spring turkey season. I'm gonna miss turkey season back in Kentucky where I'm from and I was just wanting to know about the area and how the birds are up here and all the hunting opportunities that are up here. If you could get back with me i would appreciate it. ThanksI can't wait till turkey season. Seeing a lot more birds on public land this year. Especially in areas I haven't seen them in the last few years. Went out looking for pigs and found one flock of 23 hens and a mile down the trail, I saw a mixed group of 15 jakes and tons together. Three of them had some ropes and one had gnarly Spurs.
As long as we as hunters limit the number of jakes being taken to JR hunters and first time hunters, we should be good.
I love my Fly down junkie slate. Great sound.
I love gobblers........From today.........
Oh, and be careful out there, when it's windy.....Lots of dead oaks, especially black oak.....Also from today......

Definitely.. but with the spring dispersal they will venture onto nearby public lands. A couple of the public spots I hunt I don't see birds at any time other than Feb-Apr. So like others have mentioned, if you can figure out what private areas they congregate, and then scout adjacent public lands from now until opener, you may luck into a good opportunity. Are birds more on private than public around here?

Much much more on private......And the reason is, they many times don't get hunted, they get better food (both natural & unnatural), and there's almost always permanent water......This is not unlike most places I hunt out of state.
Like has been mentioned, when spring dispersal starts, there will be birds thru-out our county......One day there's no turkeys, next day there's gobbles.....When I hunted nothing but public, I would hunt almost every morning.....Would finally get a bird (normally a jake), then would shoot nothing but longs.....1st few seasons meant 1 turkey.
Again, scouting is the key.....I have been out every day this week (even if it's only an hour or two) and will be out again tomorrow.....I love it!
From today.........

Yeah I've called the California fish and wildlife and they can't tell me public hunting lands or anything related to it. They act like its a big secret. I've called everybody on that website. I just want to shoot ducks and turkeys they are making this too difficult
