What happened to the true hunter

I'm not just talking about shooting trophy's. I'm talking about not shooting barley legal deer.

That's a fair statement and an honest opinion.

The challenge is that hunting fulfills many purposes for many different people. Some folks like the difficulty of a remote hunt and some the pursuit of an elusive giant. There are are others who are fulfilled by the sheer camaraderie of a hunt and yet more folks who enjoy providing meat for themselves and family.

I am not sure there are any right or wrong conceptions here, just a difference of what matters to the individual. Snake Charmer has eluded too in the past and touched on above regarding the different areas of growth a hunter goes through - in most cases hunters go through what I call "hunting phases" or how my wife so eloquently put it "the life-cycle of a hunter". I have gone through these phases as have most. Sometimes it is hard to see or understand what a particular hunter is thinking but for the most part we have all been through the learning curve as well as the process of being a hunter. What "really matters" is never a static ideology. It is ever changing with who we are, the people we associate with and the environment we live in.

To be a hunter you must have hunted...

Blah blah blah...

Here is some food for thought - A Prose poem I have held close to my sole for many years...

We must not forget

Sometimes beneath the shimmering surface of my memory I sense deeper memories of generation after generation of hunters.

For tens of thousands of years I have kept a faithful record of my hunting so the children of my children's children will know and remember.
And more permanent than any painted stone is the memory that lies at the heart of my every cell.
The memory of my hunting, the history of my tribe.

And when I awake beneath the modern sky, full of smoke and sound, as from a dream, I believe
I have lost my way back. For I cannot forget I am a hunter, and I am from a race of hunters, and there is no place for hunters in this time....

sorry Take em but being a true hunter has nothing to do with antler size...your beef is not true hunter vs."non true hunter".. your beef is meat hunter vs. trophy hunter. Not everybody is a trophy hunter.

I'm both if u can do that. I kill a freezer deer then I pass and keep passing I have some meat and no trophy but I was close

don't get me wrong...we have a pretty respectable trophy room and there's nothin more exciting and rewarding than killin something with a big ol rack...but if my freezer's gettin close to empty I can guarantee i'm gonna let some lead fly..Take ems post has nothing to do with being a true hunter thats all im sayin

so you want to see more guys deep into the woods and less guys road hunting?

TakeEm i think your heart is in the right place on this but i think maybe you have to look at this from another angle. It's not your place to tell anyone how they should hunt or how hard they should work its good enough for me that they are even out hunting. WE NEED THE CAUSAL HUNTERS ON OUR SIDE!!!!!!!!! don't forget that part. If lets say they make it hard to get a tag in D16 all the casual hunters go bye bye and now our numbers are even smaller then they already are. Divide and slaughter is the anti way :) The the road clowns are not killing anything to speak of numbers wise so what is the harm? If you want to see big deer get away from the clowns and go deep or hunt the places where deer density is low but size is greater. I know guys that slam nice deer every year. They go way off the beaten path and never so much as peep about the deer they get. Are they the true hunter? Nope they just hunt harder than you or i do :)

You are a duck hunter so a question for you. Are guys that hunt Wister True hunters? or are guys like me who hunt public land or in scary country's where i might get my head cut off

One Cause, We are all True Hunters!!!!! well maybe not that dude that trespassed on snakes land

Post some Duck Porn TakeEm Its been a sour year for me so far on the ducks and with a name like TakeEm you should have some to post :)

And don't forget the most important point - True Hunters wear blue jeans! ;D

The best way I can explain what I mean is I would rather never punch a tag my entire life then to shoot a spike with a point on one side just big enough to hang a ring on. Being a true hunter is not just filling the freezer its also preserving this great sport. If you have no other way to feed your family then shoot what ever walks in your path. But no matter how hard u hunt and no matter how much time u put in the woods I don't agree with taking an infant deer. We as hunters have a bigger responsibility than just getting meat in the freezer and that is ensuring that the wild life can grow and prosper. I do not agree with shooting young dear just as much as you don't agree with me disagreeing with it. I would like to take my son hunting one day and everyone just wanting to get meat will eventually prevent that from happenig. I said nothing about always hunting trophies. I am saying to let the infants go and let them get a little older. If you can barley see that extra point even with your binos you should let them walk.Agree or disagree we should be a more ethical hunter and that's not just fair chase its letting the little ones go and that to me is a true hunter.

are you ok with shooting a doe?

you are running under the assumption that the number of young bucks being killed is having this tragic affect on the local SD deer population.
here is the link to the DFG harvest data interesting reading on the number of deer killed in d16

Yes mostv definitely. If they don't have a phawn and aremature. I took my first doe with a bow last year

the point i am trying to make here is that the resource D16 is managed for maximum recreation and hunter use not trophy size. The population is stable after you take out the variable of how dry its been of late. A couple good years of rain and the population will bounce along with antler size.

I am calling the spelling police if you don't post some pics of dead ducks.

A yearling or "infant" deer will most likely be a button buck or a spike his first, without good genetics. Usually a deer with a fork on the upper 2/3s of his antler will be most likely a 1 1/2 year old deer. At that point he is not an "infant" just a young deer and perfectly legal to shoot. People have been hunting for meat forever and the deer are still here. But i do agree to disagree with you on this topic. We all have our separate views and luckily we will in this great nation that allows to have our on views.

You are analizing every word one in a half old dear to me is to young and leting them live would bennefit us more than shooting them. And I keep trying to post pics but I can't figure it out. I have some real good ones from public land at the sea

I'm not kicking anybody that got off the couch and got out there and harvested a deer, congrats to them.

However I would like to see the majority of the deer harvested age a few more years. Eighty plus percent of the deer harvested are 2 1/2 years old or less. If these deer were to age to 4 1/2 years of age they would be about 40 pounds heavier on average. However I have seen plenty of 4 1/2 year old forks. So letting these deer age will not guarantee that there will be more 4X4 trophy's out there, But it would give them a chance to be all that they can be.
Personally I would rather see a mature doe taken than a 2 1/2 year old buck.

Take Em', I am sure that all of us understand where you are coming from and what you are trying to say. I understand. You would like to see bigger deer on the public land by "letting them go, so they can grow". That is a completely valid and understandable position.

Hunters in general are very prideful people, proud of there country, proud of their hunting heritage, and proud of themselves. By your definition you are stating that (now this is a guess off the top of my head) most of the American deer hunters are not "true hunters". At least that is how it came across to me. Most hunters including myself do not have the time or resources to hunt a lot. When they get an opportunity to take their quarry they can not pass up that opportunity (this is where i fit in, personally).

The deer herd will not disappear because we continue to shoot young deer. If something like that happened they would most likely just drop the amount of tags allotted, until numbers were back on the rise. As long as we continue to stick together as one against the anti's we will be good.

I believe all hunters that choose there shots well and strive to make quick clean kills on game are the true hunters.
