The CA season is already over for me unless I decide to get a tag OTC.
I got my ass kicked in the mountains. Long high hikes in altitude are not for everyone but they are for me. I could do without 90+ degree weather though.
On the third day in the late afternoon I missed a shot high from 310yrds at a bigger Buck. I just could not get stable enough and honestly I rushed it just a little bit. Needless to say I thought I would not get another chance. Time ran out and I had to go home.
The idea that I could go back and find the one that got away kept me up at night. I took a couple of days to li ckk my wounds and I went back.
The one place that presented the biggest physical challenge ended up holding.
220 yrds up very high in a canyon wall there he was with a couple of forkies.
This time I took my time. The Tika 6.5 cr with Hornandy 120gr was plenty and I took him home.
AZ Elk in December is next.
A light riffle is awesome to carry but a bitch to keep stable under fatigue..

Yeah, not that you would need any advice but for others who are newish to hunting and hunt public land and are not road hunters. I would suggest to take that in to account when buying a rifle. Perhaps another pound or two might help to keep it steady when shooting standing up or from a poorly stable position. Carrying a little more weight with a good sling might be a good trade off.
The little bi-pods I used in combo with hiking poles do help but, there isn't always enough time to get set up.
Now I want one more rifle..lol.
