We couldn’t hunt yesterday because of baseball. Fallbrook JV beat the ugly out of Valley Center with a 23-5 win. We hit the trail this morning at 415 and were well within the zone before light. Three guys hiked in and passed us they said they were going in to listen. I thought that was dumb there just gonna scare spook them before the opener but oh well. We had a hen come in and put on a calling clinic but not much gobbles. After an hour we were hearing an occasional distant gobble. We picked up the decoy headed into a creek bed and moved in closer. We set up again and started hammering the box call. They started getting closer so I shut up and let the decoy do the rest. I put a red dot on the shotgun this year and it worked great.
