They are judged by how long they can hold their breath.I forgot to mention, I’m going to bring along an old spotting scope to field judge the Ruddies before I pull the trigger. What should I look for in a trophy Ruddy, besides plumage?

I never would of thought of that, but it makes sense! I’ll start a journal this season so I can track the trophy quality from one blind to the next, year after year, so I can calculate which blind has the most potential. They are judged by how long they can hold their breath.
One more thing, I’ve got more than enough coots in the freezer to last me the whole year, so no desperation here.

On a serious note watch out for this guy. He would take your dog under. Also might want to think twice about crapping in the reeds. According to Tom , this turtle eats five Giant ruddys a day. Picture was taken last Monday
Have you heard of anyone stepping on one of those guys wading to their blind or throwing out decoys?View attachment 44070

As a kid, I caught the biggest red eared slider I've ever seen at lake #7 Santee Lakes while cat fishing. It tried to take my finger off releasing it. City folk letting pets go I reckon.I caught small ones at Santee lakes ant these buggers about took my fingers off.
Don't think these are supposed to live around here? I trapped them and sold them to a chinese restaurant when I was in elementary school in Wisconsin.View attachment 44070
