Looking for a recommendations to put my 16 week old lab into for physical obedience, and I started a gun dog program.

I’ve been looking at High on kennels and Raney ranch

Any recommendations other than these or have any input on anyone that’s use them?

Fred (high on kennels) has a trainer up there that does great work, her name is Ruth, I believe she has worked with @NBK dogs extensively.

I used her for bird intro and gun Goose’s initial gun intro. I recommend her, she is great and reasonable.

Following up on this;

My black lab has no pedigree history of hunt tests. Does this mean it’s not worth training for gun dog work? Or how valid is pedigree history?

IMO, pedigrees are for making more money off dog breeding...My labs have been papered, but I pay zero attention to their history...I look at puppies and pick the male that is most aggressive and wants to retrieve or play.

Again, IMO, hunting dogs are like any other athletic...The more they train, hunt, and you work with them...The better they get.

Here's Coley at 6 months...Bought in Montana from a back yard breeder...He retrieves anything you throw at him and as a little pup, all he wanted to do was get the ball...He has turned out to be a great retriever...2 cents

I agree with @ilovesprig

I have a back yard bred gsp that has no papers on her at all. She hunts side by side with some of the best bred GSP’s in the area, for her age you cant tell that she wasn’t one of the better bread dogs.

I also have put a lot of time in to her and she is either training or hunting in fields with wild birds.

Now I will say I have seen 4 months old pups point staunchly And are damn near steady right out of the box, that’s what genetics will get you.

The other hand you won’t get shit out of your genetics if you don’t hunt that dog either.

You don’t need a high dollar trainer either, work the basic house obedience. “Sit, stay down here and place “ take that dog to a field and cut it loose as much as possible and make fetch fun for the dog. Your lab will learn to love it. And bam you will have a duck dog. Also your dog is young, patience is key, @ 1 year old your dog is 50% older them it was at 6 months.

When you were 3 years old to 7 years old you got pretty dang smart comparatively.
