My buddy and I were out for quail and rabbit. While walking around we came up on a dead fox. The tail had been cutoff. Is this poaching? Cause I hate poachers.

No red fox in SoCal and grey fox season is open.....You do not have to take the animal with you.....Perhaps it was a varmint caller/hunter.
it was probably a grey fox, I've left pics of the difference below, grey fox are in season.

I agree poachers suck. I saw a news report the other day where a poacher had killed hundreds of deer illegally. He got jail time, and the judge made him watch Bambi every week during six months in jail.
The only Red Fox I know around is the steakhouse in North Park... https://www.redfoxsd.com

I dunno.. lazy? I don't do a lot of varmint skinning but I'd think taking the tail off with the bone would be hard to skin later.

Maybe he just wanted to do some game birds a favor, doesn't know how to tan it or want it. I kill coyotes any chance I get and don't take anything.

The grey fox is the number one carrier of rabies in so Cal so if you are going to take the hide wear gloves and be careful when handling them.
It didn't seem to harsh. But ya we all need to be more constructive advice.
