My dad had never killed an elk so cows were on the hitlist this year. Booked a private land hunt in Utah and went in Nov. Temps were in the 70's with no snow on mountains so we left after the second day and came back in January. First day we have elk coming over a ridge at about 200 yards and dad dumps the first cow in her tracks with a shot to the neck. I pick out the smallest cow in the group and when they stop at about 350 yards I let her have it. 2 elk down first thing on day one! Dad was pumped!
We learn we are able to buy a second tag so we do. I get one the second morning and dad gets one the third morning on a perfect broadside double lung shot at 360 yards with his Remington Sendero II 300 Win Mag. Overall great trip and got some meat for the freezer. So far I have cooked up the young one by wrapping it in caul fat, putting on smoker, and finishing in pan. Probably the most tender game I have had. Great eating.
