Bogus ticket?

Are we sure he was sighting in his rifle in an area where that is allowed? Right now there is no target shooting in SD county. There is always 2 sides to a story just saying.
Also not siding with the warden just curious and trying to better understand. Sometimes conclusions are reached without all of the information. Like maybe he gave him the lesser of the two tickets?

I can tell you all....This does not need to become a bashing warden thread and I'm leaving it for now so hopefully some new hunters may learn from it.

A couple of other things...Let's not be naming names on past troubles with wardens....We need wardens....We also shouldn't tolerate hunter harassment or bad citations, if not warranted.

Drew,

You said that we can't target shoot in San Diego Co...I have looked at the BLM & San Diego Co. websites and can't find anything that states this...CNF clearly states, you must be in legal pursuit of game...Can you post where you found this?

Looks like it is opened again according to bills link. They closed May 6 and were supposed to be closed until Dec 31.
Surprised it’s open again and this early in the year. Sorry for the “fake news”.

I am with you I don’t want to bash on a warden either LEO get enough crap we don’t need to pile on. If the guy is innocent he will get off.

My old friend got a bogus ticket a few years back, well it wasn't really bogus but I told him it was to make him feel better. the $275 fine didn't make him feel better. He was shooting quail after sundown. When he told me, he thought it was 1/2 hour after sundown, I told him, keep reading the, "unless otherwise specified section."

@ilovesprig looks like it was just lifted Nov 17 so depending on when this ticket happened I might be right.

Drew,

Thank you...Again, the citation to my understanding is not for target shooting...It's for not having his hunting license in his immediate possession after accusing him of hunting without it.

Bottom line and lesson to be learned...Keep your license in your walnut or within reach while hunting.

I'm a huge fan of law enforcement....shit is designed to hurt fellas....it's all in the attitude .. take it like a man... I'm hunting the 16 with stevo next year...not sure if I'm bringing blue yet..

Blue and Moose..music to my ears..
Christ, that brings back the ONE night I spent in bear camp a few years back. all night long, bloodhounds, dogos, blue ticks, plotthounds, coonhounds, not a wink of sleep did I get. All night long. Prolly won't sleep tonight just thinking about it.

LICENSE PROVISIONS A valid California hunting license is required for taking any bird or mammal. Hunters must carry licenses and be prepared to show them on request (§700, T14, CCR). Guns and other equipment used in hunting must be shown on request.
Page 9 here... https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=193376&inline

700, T14, CCR (b) Possession of Hunting License: Every person, while engaged in taking any bird or mammal shall have on their person or in their immediate possession a valid hunting license.
Now. It depends if you can convince a judge you weren't hunting but only sighting in your rifle. Also, since it says "...in their immediate possession..." if you can convince the judge that in the backpack 200 yards away is "immediate possession".

The ticket is for no deer tag on him it has nothing to do with blm land and shooting.

GW always has my respect until they cross the line only happened once where we were being harassed because some hunter in the area poached a deer. They were doing their job investigating just not on the up and up with questions and attitude. They even harassed a youth hunter at his house wanting to check his apartment for the deer....very sad he no longer hunts BG in SD.

No bashing just my first hand experience in SD. I get checked 1-3 times a year so 99% all good.

95 percent of my shots at deer are taken laying down with my rifle on my pack same with sighting in a rifle especially out in the back country. Obviously the warden didn’t see anything to lead him to believe there was target shooting going on? Am I missing something? Hard to believe he rolled up on two guys sighting in on a target of some sort? Paper? packs in the truck? No tags? Bench rest? Idk sounds like your boy is in for a stiff one.

I hunt an area that is 100% legal to hunt, legal to park, and legal to access. It is however very close to a “no go zone” deer will wander over to NF often, and when they do I fill my freezer. I constantly get harassed no matter the situation, I often have fish and game sit and watch me for hours. No ticket, but constant harassment. After many years and many great bucks I finally stopped hunting the 16
