SIDEARM: Black Bear: Lightest Pistol you feel safe carrying for a Backup?

I must have missed it. What caliber did we decide on?

So far the most logical choices seem to be Glock 20 (10mm) or a S&W 329PD (.44 Mag). Since these options weigh less.

Since I ended up impulse-buying a Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag while I was there... I'm thinking it may prove wise to go with a matching .44 Mag so I'd only be fussing with one cartridge type for both those weapons.

Kinda depends though. Since my Vision started tanking these last 5 years. I'd have to see what the 329PD's sights are like first before committing to it.

Sounds like somebody has been drinkin' on that HATCHET juice Ed F. Oh well, "Birds of a Feather" I guess.

And nobody said it was 4-5 miles. That place is 7 miles all downhill going in there.

What I said was that sometimes on the trip back up... around mile 4 or 5 I've had my hip-socket flare-up on me real bad a time or two.

But hey, lil codeine to the rescue and we persist and make it happen. Not that you actually cared anyway.

I dont know Larry , i gotta think that after reading you,re posts ,most folks get a little thirsty...LOL..

I stand corrected... 7 miles. That would be a foolish venture. Believe it or not, I do care about your feelings. Ed F

Foolish? Well... I prefer the term "Bold" instead. But anyhoo.. 8-29-2015 I literally had two face-to-face Bear Encounters down in there on the same day. (And we didn't know it at the time, but it was the first day of Bear Archery season, so if I had my bow, I literally could have shot a Bear in the face!) And on a subsequent trip... coming back out of there at last light, we jumped a Bear that lept out of a Pool of water, made all 3 of us jump with a bit of a startle.

That first day of two encounters in one day was powerful for me... because it took that idea out of the realm of a just a far off wish or notion... and made it seem actually possible and attainable. I'm gonna make it happen one of these days... it's just a question of when. Something inside of me... I have to make this happen. And when I do? I'm gonna take the coolest picture ever with our tiny little long-haired Chihuahua laying on top of that rug, to further emphasize the size difference, and make me smile :) while I'm on the phone probably scheduling a hip-replacement surgery afterward, HaHA!

My first reaction to "7 miles in"

Ohhh man i don't want to drive that far

Pssh, you're tellin' me. And the angering part of it is... that 7 miles way? That's a bleepin' road! But.. ya know... you and I... just being members of the peon "public" don't have the *priviledge* of using that road which WE pay for. And yet.... I've had a truck pass by me a couple times when coming back outta there. So I'm curious to know who the Heck DOES have this priviledge to drive on in there!

Meh... But it's sorta Ok, I guess. Because the last time I was jammin' down in there on the MTB... it was after that years surprise strong rain around August... and there had been some pretty gnarly rock-slide onto that road. Thankfully I spotted a Mama Doe and her girls on the other side of a large draw/ravine and came to a full stop to not spook them away so I could enjoy watching them.

And it was a good thing too because when I started back up... came around a corner and was like "WHOA!" and had to put on the brakes and then carry the MTB thru the rubble to get past it. I think there is a high likelihood I *may* not have been able to come down from speed fast enough at the rate I was going prior to stopping. So that incident reminded me of a good lesson that I'd gotten lax on, which is to chill the bleep out in speed if you can't see around the corner or over the rise. I wasn't in that mindset since it was just a nice wide road, rather than a trail, ya know?

Being honest I think shooting a bear facing a solo 7 mile uphill pack out with back or hip flare ups is not the wisest choice. I suppose it depends on the size of the bear. I guess I've seen little ones that wouldn't be a problem to pack out but I personally would pass on those anyways. Get a buddy to hunt with you if you plan on taking something bigger that deep in would be my suggestion.

I'm totally cool with taking a smaller one. Since it'd be a first for me.

First one I saw I estimated to be a little less than my size (I'm 225 Lbs, I figured him to be 200), probably a little less. I'd still consider that doable. The second one we saw that day, he was maybe 300+ though. He'd have been a problem. I'd totally have to do two-trips with him. And to do that.. I just might have to sleep over night in my truck, then try again in the morning.

Others I've seen on trailcams up there look like maybe 140-160ish maybe. That I know I could do.

Way I figure it. All of them are doable... just becomes a question of how long it takes to get back up. With the weight I'd just have to take my sweet-@$$ time with LOTS of breaks. (Hence the reason for a rapidly deployable weapon, just for a "security blanket" type feeling) I figure realistically it'd probably take me like... somewhere in the neighborhood of 4.0 - 6.0 hours, depending on how often and how long I'd have to stop. Plus the time waiting for the sun to go down before beginning.

Damn raod hunters arent true hunters!! Just killers!! Poor bear! Arrgh!!! P.s..that white patch on his throat sure makes for a perfect target..jus sayin..he,s a beauty ed.

So what's that one.. about 200Lbs range thereabouts, it looks like?

Man... wish I had the space in my little house for a mount like that. That mount looks really cool, Ed. For "S & G" how much does a mount of that nature run, give or take, what's the cost range?

P.S. Kinda like that this style of mount doesn't utilize those fake looking weird tongue prosthetics.
