    Looking into Muzzleloader seasons

I knew He's chime in. I thought of a few more things. If you are wanting a "hunting rifle", probably the best bet would be to go for a Hawken with a 1:28" twist. The longer Kentucky or Pennsylvania types are usually a 1:60 or 1:66 twist, which only shoot PRB's. You can use PRB's here in Kali...

    Looking into Muzzleloader seasons

"Open sights" and "Long range" don't really go well together. First of all, start with where you want to hunt. Are in-lines allowed? If not, that cuts you down to a traditional percussion style, which isn't bad. For info, I have both. My in-line is a Thompson Center Omega and has a Williams peep...

For Hunting do you agree with his comments, your thoughts

I just worked up a load for my 308 using 124-grain Hammer Hunters. It's 2.80" to the lands. The Nosler data I'm using said to seat at 2.75". However, I seated at 2.70" and shot a 1/4" group. I questioned Steve at Hammer and he said just to seat at the top cannelure, which was 2.70". With a 1/4"...

    John...I joined the group!

PS...My rifle is a stock Ruger American. The only thing I did to it was to file off a little of the stock on the left side where it was touching the barrel. It is now fully free-floating. Don't let anyone tell you that inexpensive rifles won't shoot well. My son has one too, and it shoots just...

    John...I joined the group!

While down in Texas on an Axis hunt, I talked quite a bit with blkpowder hunter, aka Dan, about his antelope hunt. He was using Hammer Hunters and his description of the lungs of an antelope he shot convinced me I should try them. NBK has been on my case as well and I finally pulled the trigger...

    North San Diego County Newbie

You might want to come down to the San Diego County Varmint Callers meeting on the third Monday of each month at the Ranch House Restaurant, 11510 Woodside Ave., Santee at 6:00 pm. We have dinner there and start the meeting at 7:00. It's not all varmints. We hunt any and all legal species of...

    Kanati Rock Ranch, Rocksprings, Texas

A couple of members of our varmint hunting club have been going to Texas for the past couple of years and finally did the deed and purchased a 100-acre spread near Rocksprings, about 100 miles NW of San Antonio. Their dream is to turn it into a hunting ranch, and they have been working hard on...

Follow-up on the sight. I was at the range today with Blkpowder Hunter after installing the Williams FP-Hawken rear peep sight. The .571 front sight was the correct height for the setup. I just changed it out with a .570 Williams wide-base FireSight and it was Test Day today. With the rear sight...

    New muzzleloader...sort of

I've been shooting a 45 caliber Thompson Center Hawken for several years. From the threads on this site, I became good friends with Blkpowder Hunter. We met at the range a while back to do an eyeball meet. Shortly afterwards, he got me interested in match shooting. My first meet was interesting...

    WARNING - Traditions Nitrofire

Here's the reply... Hi Mr. Barber: I did some checking within the Law Enforcement Division of the Department. Basically, we believe your interpretation is correct… the bullet and the powder/charge must both be loaded from the muzzle. This would be for the take of big game mammals. As such, we...

    WARNING - Traditions Nitrofire

Turns out the NitroFire MAY be legal in Kalifornication after all. A DFW Captain friend of mine and I discussed the way the law is written and it does say the projectile has to go in from the front, but is mute about the powder. He says it's legal. I did contact the DFW in Sacto and asked for a...

who's your favorite powder load data, I was given a tip

Another chirp from me...The powder manufacturers loads are almost always VERY conservative. It's in their own interest you don't blow up a rifle. The best data comes from the manufacturer of the bullet you are using. They test THEIR bullets with several powders. NOW, check their data with what...
