Alright sorry for the delay. No service in the hellhole this buck was shot.
Made the 1.5 hour journey to Coues country bright and early. The boys have been troopers. We are making them work for it 4am or bust let’s go.
We got to the spot around 6:30 and instantly started glassing up deer. I took my boys a few ridges in about a mile one way Pat took his grandson the same difference the other way. Around 8:30 pat hit me up on the radio and said he has two bucks about a mile away as the crow flies. One buck looks real good the other is a small fork.
We packed up the boys and started what ended up being a 7.5 mile 143 floor day. When we were about a 1/2 mile from the last known location of the deer. Boom, boom, boom, boom. 4 shots and we can tell they are near or directed towards our buck. By the time we got down there we spited a dad and his what looked like 10 year old son up on a ridge. He must have had his kid shooting over 800 yards and he definitely didn’t hit any deer since they were still on the ridge talking loudly.
Well it’s public land so I got high on the opposite side of the canyon of the deer and started glassing about a 1/4 mile from where we assumed the kid missed. About an hour later I pick up the small fork about 10 minutes later his dad shows up and pushes him out of his bed. These two bucks were running with about 10 does. They headed into thick cover and I assumed he wouldn’t be coming out.
A while later the dink steps out in the open right above what would become the tombstone tree since it has a tombstone shaped rock at its base. Just then big hank steps out in the same opening and starts feeding. I hold pat off and wait for to see if he will bed and sure enough this buck beds on top of a rock above the tombstone tree.
Pats grandson has been hunting deer for 3 years and he is 17. He still doesn’t have a buck and this is our last chance to get him one before life starts. I tell pat get into position and I don’t leave the glass for probably the next 1.5 hours. I have a clear view of the buck at 450 but we want to get the kid closer. Problem is the rock the buck is bedded on hides him unless you get ete level. St this point Pat is going blind and I am walking him into this deer he gets Brandon prone on a perfect rock 300 yards from the deer. This is clues hunting you can’t get any closer to this buck. I tell home Above Tombstone tree, shadow that looks like a clock, look at the 2 position on the moss shaded rock. After an eternity he finally has the buck bedded in the kids scoop but there is no shot until he stands up.
The buck is up but only a few steps from the trees. One step two steps boom. That bullet was so high it might still be flying. Instead of running the buck spins around and starts feeding and licking himself but now he is out of the shooters view and only I can see him. The does are up the buck is 5 feet behind them. They can see the does but not the buck one more step kapow spines him does a back flop DRT.
Definitely a good Coues 4x3 or if you want to go whitetail a 9 point. Awesome day we are smoked. I am gonna drive my truck to Yuma tomorrow. And grab the Jeep from the river. I will worry about the truck after deer season. My boys are up next so tomorrow they will Hunt with Pat until I get back in the afternoon. Deer 2 Boys 1.
